Projects

Duplicate a project

Deep-copies a project into the same product: every environment and every variable, ciphertext included, in one transaction.

POST/projects/{slug}/duplicate

Deep-copies a project into the same product: every environment and every variable, ciphertext included, in one transaction. Takes no request body. The copy is named <name> (Copy) (truncated to 50 characters) with a slug derived from that name and suffixed -2, -3, ... until it is free inside the product; after enough collisions a random 6-character suffix is used instead. Refused outright for project-restricted keys with 403 auth.key_project_restricted, because the new project could not be covered by the key's allowlist. Needs both projects:write and variables:write. The workspace project allowance is checked before any copying happens, so a 402/409 leaves nothing behind. Project slugs are unique per product, so pass ?product=<productSlug> when the source slug is ambiguous.

Requires the projects:write or variables:write scope.

Query parameters

Authorization

  • Authorizationstringrequiredheader

Bearer token: an Envless API key (ev_sk_…), created in the dashboard or with POST /keys. The key is bound to one workspace; every request runs inside it.

Path parameters

  • slugstringrequired

Slug or uniqueId of the project to copy. A UUID-shaped value is resolved as an id first, then as a slug.

Query parameters

  • productstring

Product slug used to disambiguate the project slug. Required whenever the same project slug exists in more than one product.

401Unauthorized

  • auth.api_key_required - the Authorization header is missing, or its value does not start with ev_sk_.
  • auth.api_key_not_found - the key is unknown, inactive or revoked.
  • auth.api_key_user_missing - the key is valid but its owner no longer exists.
  • auth.api_key_owner_not_member - the key's owner is no longer a member of the key's workspace.

402Payment Required

plan.upgrade_required - the workspace already holds its plan's project allowance. data carries { limit, current }.

403Forbidden

  • auth.key_project_restricted - the key is scoped to a list of project ids; a duplicate would fall outside that list.
  • auth.scope_missing - the key lacks projects:write or variables:write.
  • auth.workspace_two_factor_required - the workspace requires two-factor authentication and the key's owner has not turned it on.

404Not Found

project.not_found - no project matches in scope for this key.

409Conflict

  • project.ambiguous_product - the slug resolves to projects in more than one product; retry with ?product=<productSlug>.
  • plan.limit_reached - reserved for a plan whose project allowance sits at or above the 1,000 fair-use cap. No current tier can trigger it: Free, Dev and Team fail with 402 plan.upgrade_required at their own allowance instead, and Enterprise is unlimited and never hits a plan limit. data carries { limit, current }.
  • product.not_found - the product was deleted while the project was being duplicated.

500Internal Server Error

server.error - an unexpected error; retry with backoff.

503Service Unavailable

server.error - the API is in maintenance mode or is missing its configuration; retry with backoff.
